When did it become okay.....

to text instead of talk?

to show everyone your bra while wearing a shirt?

to let your children run the show?

to be so busy that you can't just sit outside and visit with friends and do nothing?

to assume that sex is a part of dating?

to give your child whatever they want just to stop their crying?

to allow the government to run everything for us?

to refrain from sharing opinions because they weren't "politically correct"?

to assume that because something or someone is different from you, they're "wrong" or "bad"?

to criticize everything and everyone?

to not understand or know the true history of this country?

to disrespect senior citizens?

to not say "No" to your kids?

to leave the responsibility of teaching your children to others?

Beach Day

PEI dirt really is red

Looking for cool shells & sea glass

These next pictures were taken later in the evening at Brackley Beach.  To celebrate our anniversary, we decided to have a professional photographer take some pictures of us at sunset on the beach.  While these ARE NOT those photos, we stayed a little longer and played around with our own camera.

We had an amazing sunset on August 17, 1991 and we had an amazing sunset on August 17, 2011.

The Peters Family

John & Freida are what you call “True Islanders”.  Freida was raised in Tignish, PEI in a fishing family, although she is the first to tell you that she prefers the land to the sea.  When she married John, they moved to Rustico, where John was raised.  John is the only son of a 5th generation fisherman and now John owns the family business.  Fishing is all he knows.  It is his life.  He eats, drinks, breathes, & lives for fishing and fishermen rights and for the old ways of fishing.

Ironically, he only fishes for lobster 2 months out of the entire year….May & June.  He has licenses to fish for mackerel, cod, & other fish, but it’s not as profitable as lobster.  John & Freida own a restaurant….the Skipper’s Café….but he cannot bring his lobster to his own store.  It’s illegal in Canada to do that.  He must sell his lobster to buyers and then buy lobster for the restaurant from the buyers….THAT should be illegal, in my opinion.  The restaurant is only open from June to September.  Then tourist season is over and the Rustico harbor begins to close down for the winter.

During the winter, John builds his lobster traps and Freida works as an accountant.  During the summer, Freida is one of the restaurant’s cooks.  Most of the recipes are hers, however, she admits baking is not her thing, so someone else does all the baking.  While we were there with them, we had steamed mussels and seafood chowder.  It was delicious.  We were given a bowl of 30 mussels and a tiny little fork.  You use your fork to pull the meat out of its shell and dip it in melted butter.  They tasted similar to cooked oysters.  The seafood chowder is made fresh everyday with mussels, lobster, shrimp, potato, & onion in a butter/milk/cream broth.  They purchase all their foods from PEI sellers.  They want to support their island.

After lunch, John took us out on his boat.  The day had been rainy, but the rain had stopped by then.
However, the waves were still choppy from the wind.  It was quite the ride and it was so fun to watch John do something that was second nature to him.  Freida sat on the bench, staying very quiet & trying not to get sick.  She was right…she definitely prefers the land.  Once her feet were on solid ground again, she perked right up.

Lobstering is hard, hard labor.  A fisherman leaves early in the morning to check all his lines.  John fishes 7 miles up the coast & 7 miles out into the Gulf of St. Lawrence.  His area is large because his family is one of the most prominent fisherman families.  The traps weigh about 100 pds each and they must haul in 300 traps per day.  He uses a small machine to help him pull in the traps.  After the traps are emptied, they are re-baited and set out again to be checked the following day.  He gets back to the dock early afternoon, always the first one back.

One of the hardest things was knowing that when John dies, his trade dies with him.  They have no children, although I think they would like some, but have not been blessed with any during their 12 years of marriage.

Our goal in coming to PEI was to see the real PEI, not just the tourist side.  Today we accomplished that.  We met completely real, truly genuine, fiercely passionate islanders.
It made the island even more beautiful.

PEI Trip

BIENVENUE!!

As I sit here in the hotel drinking my hot chocolate, I am filled with a mixture of anxiety & peace.
Perhaps it's because we've spent all day either in an airport or on a plane.
Perhaps it's because we spent the entire day together knowing we were on a trip together for the first time.

Perhaps it's because when we went to pick up our rental car, they wouldn't rent it to us because we have no credit card.
Perhaps it's because they did give us the car, on the condition that we pay for it up front, which we did with our debit card.

Perhaps it's because when we went to the hotel, we got lost because we weren't on the right road.
Perhaps it's because we borrowed a GPS unit from my dad & then we found the hotel.

Perhaps it's because when we got to the hotel, we couldn't pay for the hotel room because we have no credit card.
Perhaps it's because we had enough Canadian cash to pay for the room up front.

Perhaps it's because we're in a totally new country with different money, different words, & different accents.
Perhaps it's because we're together and we're celebrating 20 years of anxiety & peace.

BIENVENUE!!

Day 5 New York

Our longest journey on the bus took us from Philadelphia to Palmyra (the Sacred Grove) and then to Buffalo.  We stayed 2 nights in Buffalo, but had our concert in a wonderful place called Chautauqua Institute
The best part about this day was spending 30 minutes with one of my best friends from high school, Elise.  It had been about 10+ years since we'd last seen each other.  Her kids were darling and after such a short time, it felt like I'd known them forever.  I can't let another 10 years go by.
I fell in love with NY state.  I had no idea NY was so green and lush and beautiful.  If it weren't for choir, I could move there in a heartbeat!
Visiting the Sacred Grove was so amazing.  Just a beautiful feeling.  I wish I had more time and I can't wait to take the kids there.
Chautauqua was a quaint little place...like a time warp to the early 1900's.  I loved it.  The people were so gracious and excited to have us there.  When we got off the bus, there were hosts waiting to take us to the venue for our rehearsal.  I think the choir first performed in Chautauqua in 1947 and there were actually members of the audience who attended that first performance!  While we were on break walking around, we had one lady ask us if the choir members ever fight while spending so much time together.  The truth is there was very little grumbling and bad feelings during tour.  Everyone is so kind and helpful to each other.  The spirit among the choir members themselves is so happy.
The weather was quite cool and I ended up getting a jacket as my souvenir.
